The motivation behind the concept for a new corporate headquarters facility in Huntsville’s Cummings Research Park was the owner’s desire to provide a comfortable, modern, light infused work space to better facilitate collaboration and efficiency. The new campus provides 39,000 sq. ft. of office, meeting, and storage space to support LogiCore’s customer needs. The primary building includes an event hall with a seating capacity of up to 320 (theater capacity), 222 (banquet capacity), and 160 (training capacity) and an auditorium with a seating capacity of 96. LogiCore worked with ChamblessKing Architects of Huntsville to design a modern facility that is energy efficient and economically sustainable. The facility was constructed by Fite Construction Company of Decatur, AL who was selected based on a best-value evaluation of proposals to meet facility design specifications.
Located at the corner of Voyager Way and Explorer Boulevard in the heart of Cummings Research Park, the building is ideally situated in one of the world’s leading science and technology business parks. It is easily accessible to Research Park Boulevard, Interstate 565, and Redstone Arsenal. A variety of restaurants and the 210-room Westin Hotel at the Bridge Street Town Centre are but a short walk from the LogiCore campus.
In keeping with LogiCore’s sustainability objectives to minimize lifecycle maintenance and repair costs and to maximize energy efficiency, the building was clad in zinc and stone. Zinc is a weatherproof, corrosion resistant, fully recyclable, and maintenance-free material that has a lifespan of 80-100 years. The material takes half the energy to produce from ore than steel or copper, and a quarter of the energy required for Aluminum. The extruded aluminum soffit system finished to look like wood gives the warmth and aesthetic of natural wood without the continual maintenance. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing energy-efficient components were also incorporated into the building design. Energy efficient LED and high-frequency florescent lighting, occupancy sensors, and low-flow flush valves are a few of the energy efficient features.
The linear shape of the buildings and the extent of windows allows for great daylighting throughout the buildings, decreasing the need for artificial lighting and creating a pleasant and healthy work environment. The highly energy-efficient glass, with a high R-value and low solar heat gain coefficient, lets in daylight while keeping out heat or cold. High R-values for walls and roofs on the project were achieved with a combination of continuous external insulation and internal batt insulation.
The notion of collaboration and visibility is reinforced heavily by interior glass walls and doors that maximize visual communication. Offices and collaborative spaces are bathed in natural light from the exterior floor-to-ceiling windows, while bathrooms, storage rooms, electrical rooms, the Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF), and other areas where natural light is less important, are positioned in the core of the facility where there are no windows. This allowed us to provide natural light in 98% of our work spaces.
